Makans : Viva Victoria

Posted on September 03, 2018

This is one of my favorite places to dine in.

Hey guys, it's been forever since I've updated this blog. If you're following me on Instagram, you would've probably noticed that I've been posting a lot on food. I'm also part of a project called "Wine & Dine". You can check us out on Facebook here.

I've decided to start a new series here titled "Makans" - "Makan" means "eat" in Bahasa Melayu (Embracing my Malaysian-ness).

As this is one of my favourite places to dine in in Penang, I'm featuring this cafe as my debut for the series. Here are the food I had during one of my visits at Viva Victoria.

Salad ft. Duck Liver Pate

Starting off with a simple yet satisfying appetizer, I was served with this colourful salad which includes many vegetables you don't normally get from elsewhere such as broccoli and beetroot.

It was served with some simple yet delightful dressings that did not "drown" the veges but instead made them appetizing even for people who don't prefer salads!

In the photo, you can see that there are also some breadsticks served with their signature duck liver pate. This homemade pate is a must-try~

Truffle Mushroom Cappuccino

How cute are these?!

This is another specialty by Viva Victoria and it is none other than the Truffle Mushroom Cappuccino.

This is honestly the best mushroom soup I've ever tasted (and trust me, I've tried more than you'd think). The aroma and texture are perfect!

They have this in a normal soup portion as well.

First main course of the night was this thick, juicy, tenderloin steak-topped with toasted blue cheese.

The meat was cooked to perfection as I tend to be quite particular with the meats I take.

Pair this with a fine red wine and you'll taste its brilliant harmony (aka foodgasm).

If you're looking for a place to get quality yet affordable steak, do give this a go!

Duck Confit

To be honest, it was my first time having duck confit. I've never really been a huge fan of duck but because it smelt amazing when the dish arrived, I had to give it a go.

Thank goodness I gave it a chance because I never knew duck could taste this great!

I love that some pickled beetroot were served as a side: it helps balance out the strong meat and even enhances its flavour.

If you're a duck-meat lover, this is your dish.

Grilled Lamb Chops

Okay, if you've dined with me, you would probably know that I rarely ever take lamb. I've never been a fan of lamb due to the slight after taste I get after eating it.

However, again tempted by the scent when the dish was served, I gave it a go. Once again, I was not disappointed with my decision.

The grilled lamb chops were succulent and did not leave behind the strange after-taste I've always disliked. It comes with a flavourful homemade gravy to give your lamb chops even more wonderful than it already is.

Mee Jawa

If western food ain't your thing, don't worry, they've got some asian dishes in their menu too!

This is their (decently) new addition to their asian menu and it is our Penang-renowned Mee Jawa.

BUT, this isn't your typical mee jawa!

Other than its aromatic, true-to-Penang taste, it actually come with some massive prawns. The fresh prawns definitely give this dish an oomph you can't normally get.

So, if you want to have some fancy Malaysian food, you can get them at this cafe!

Chocolate Souffle

To complete your meal, you've got to try the desserts at Viva Victoria. They not only make brilliant savoury foods, they are also great in this category.

This is their Chocolate Souffle where you can take cute boomerangs whilst you pour the vanilla custard over your dessert.

It's honestly pretty hard to get a good souffle around here so I was really excited when I had this. I love how the crunchy top is thin and fragile, thus easily collapses-revealing its moist, fluffy inside. It's sweetness and texture are just perfect and definitely satisfying.

I had such a wonderful dining experience there and I'm sure you will too~

Although most foods I listed are meats, they do have vegan options as well. I personally love their vegan pasta and salad.

So, don't worry about not being able to find something you'd like. Their menu has quite a few varieties to choose from.

Thank you guys so much for reading and keep a look out for more posts coming up!
